Flawless Victory!

Okay, so maybe not “flawless”, but victory nonetheless.
What this is, is a screen shot of me remotely accessing my new, upgraded server, after about 11 hours of work, with a break for dinner.  I migrated the complete Active Directory server, as well as the DNS and DHCP servers.  (Which for you non-geeks means I moved all the network services that let people get to both this server and the internet.)  Trickier still was getting the print services moved to the new server.  For some very strange reason, in my opinion, the import of the exported print configuration wouldn’t work unless I had the Windows Firewall turned on for the new Windows 2012 server.  That’s just crazy to me.  Why does print services care that the firewall is turned off?  It should be able to ignore that and just go!  Damn Microsoft….  (Grumble, grumble.)

In any case, after 10+ hours of work, the upshot is that most people won’t even realize that the server was upgraded on Monday.  (At least, I hope that’s the case.)  I may still have a few issues with printing on Monday morning with some people, but, I hope, those will be few and minor.  We’ll see, I guess.  But, everything else went about as well as I could hope for.
No, it wasn’t quite “flawless”, but I was able to work it all out, so that’s good enough.
Besides, what I really get paid for, in my opinion, is not the fact that I make few mistakes, but that I make virtually no catastrophic mistakes and I can work out pretty much all of the mistakes, catastrophic or not, that I do make.
In shot, I’m very good at what I do for a living.  As a character from an old Western, “The Guns of Will Sonnet”, used to say, “That’s not brag, just fact.”

So, now, it’s off to church to give thanks for not completely fucking this up!

Sorry there wasn’t a post yesterday, but I was pretty beat from a tough week at work. Also, I upgraded to WordPress version 2.8 on most of my sites last night.
Hopefully, you’ll be enjoying the extra speed it’s supposed to give me.

Upgrade Issues

So, it seems like I still have some issues.

Someone e-mailed me this morning to see if my site was down because they were getting a blank page. Well, so was I. At least, until I hit refresh. Then, hitting the links on the categories didn’t work at all. So, I checked the WordPress support forum and tweaked a couple of things. Now, the categories give you blank pages, until you hit the refresh button. And, actually, this is all in Firefox. Firefox 2, actually, so I have no idea if any other browsers are having trouble or not. If you are, leave me a comment here so I can keep track, would you?

And, in any case, I’m working on it. Right now, the fix seems to be coming in a minor version update. This is why I usually wait a couple of months before upgrading. It’s just that this version had some things I wanted to use, so… Well, anyway, like I wrote, I’m working on it.

UPDATE:
First, let me thank you all for not taking advantage of that opening line.  It is sort of like putting on a “kick me” sign and sticking one’s rump out.
Secondly, I think I found the problem.  I upgraded WordPress, but not all the plugins I have loaded.  So, I deactivated one until I can get the new version.  Luckily, it’s one that works behind the scenes doing things for me, so your viewing experience shouldn’t be effected.
Thanks for your help and attention!

Hey, I upgraded to the latest version of WordPress, so if anything looks a little funky, it should correct itself shortly.

You may have noticed a few very minor cosmetic changes.

That’s because I upgraded the blog to the new version of WordPress Monday night.
I have to admit, I’ve been eager for the upgrade because I’ve been a little behind on that. With all the antispam plugins I was running, though, I never really had a security problem. I did have to fix a couple of plugins and replace one. You’ll notice, for instance, that the titles are a bit different. That’s due to a plugin not working with the new version and being replaced. Other changes are all behind the scenes, but involved editing other people’s ancient, and no longer supported, plugins to work with the new version. The Time Of Day plugin, which shows you, roughly, what time of day I posted something, was one of those that I had to edit a bit.
Sadly, one very good plugin, Bad Behavior, just simply had to be turned off for now. I hope the author updates it soon for the new release of WordPress, because it’s very, very good.

Now, I just have to update all my other blogs…
