Nerdy Day Trips

The moon is a Third Quarter Moon

Time to get out into the server room with the big, blue ceiling!

Spring is springing in my part of the world.  Flowers are in bloom and the weather is quite mellow and pleasant.  And, of course, I spend most of my week trapped in a server room. But, I don’t want to take a lot of time off to go do things, so that means I’m stuck doing things on the weekend.  That doesn’t give me a ton of options, but there are always day trips.  I live in Houston, so there are all kinds of things to do, but, frankly, I’m not all that into most mainstream venues.  I mean, sports bars are okay, but I’m not really into sports.  And, well, once you’ve seen most regular museums, you’ve pretty much seen them all.  So, what’s a professional geek to do on his time off?

That’s where I’m hoping Nerdy Day Trips will help.
So far, there aren’t a lot of trips described for the Houston area yet, but there are more and more getting added all the time.  Oh, they hit the biggies, like NASA and the Battleship Texas, but they also have the National Museum of Funeral History and the Alkek Velodrome, among others.  And, yes, I’ll admit, since most of my “extra” income goes to camera gear these days, I’m mostly thinking of photo opportunities, so the stranger the better, as far as I’m concerned.
So, while the weather is nice, go and take advantage of these strange opportunities.  And, if there are any that you know of which aren’t on the map, especially in the Houston area, please, add them in!

And,hey, try to get out into the world this weekend and away from the computer for a bit, okay?
You’ll thank me later!

  2. Best day trips for photography near Houston in my opinion would be a trip to bird island. National estuary right outside of Galveston with an amazing variety of birds. Amazing for nature photos.

  3. What is this “world” you speak of? I found your site while searching for a room mate agreement. Thank you. I saved it and have been tinkering with it a bit to make it workable for me and my invisible always late with the rent, no help around the house room mate who managed to loose the contract I had written up when she moved in.

I have been thinking about starting a blog/web page/ online journal of my own. I see you have been doing this for a few years. Do you like it? Has it helped you?

  4. I have a complicated relationship with my blog. Yes, for the most part, I do like it, which is why I keep doing it. Over the years, however, what and how much I write here has varied quite a bit.
When you ask “Has it helped you?”, I’m not entirely sure I understand the question. Originally, I started this blog as a tool to game Google. I used it to boost my ranking in the search engine, to make it easier to find my resume. So, yes, in that sense, it’s certainly helped. Also, it gave me a place to write and improve my writing. I suppose you could say it helped me find my “writer’s voice”.

These days, it’s easy enough to start a blog. I self-host, of course, but it’s just as easy to go to WordPress.com and start a blog for free there. Most people abandon their blogs after a while. I haven’t let go of this one quite as easily. I have one, old blog that is basically dead and another one that sees about as much posting as this one does. Different material, hopefully somewhat longer, more thoughtful, pieces, but, still, basically just another blog.
I say, go for it if you think you want to try! What have you got to lose?

  5. Hi Jim. Terminal B – bottom floor. The mural there is huge and fabulous. I could stare at it for hours. Not sure how good it would be for photographs. I also like the Japanese garden at Hermann Park. It’s large and has a nice atmosphere.

  7. Thanks, Kim! Can you get in there without having to go through security? I don’t fly very often any more, so I’m not passing through the airport regularly, but when I get through there next, I’ll look for the mural!

  8. I’m pretty sure anyone can get to the baggage area for the purpose of picking people up.

  9. Here’s a site with a picture of the mosaic – not mural like I said earlier:
